FORNEY, Texas — Two dogs were shot and killed yesterday at a Forney-area park after pulling away from a juvenile who was walking them on leashes.
The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. at the park on Spyglass Drive in the Windmill Farms neighborhood.
Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Jolie Stewart says a juvenile was walking two pit bulls on leashes, as required by law when off personal property, when they pulled away from the juvenile.
The dogs approached a man with his two children and small dog, Stewart told inForney.com.
Stewart says the father felt his children and dog were threatened by the two dogs when he discharged his firearm, striking both dogs.
Two gunshots were fire, both struck the dogs, and both bullets were accounted for, according to Stewart.
The man was licensed to carry the firearm and, at this time, no charges have been filed. Stewart says the Criminal Investigations Division will review the case which is standard procedure when a firearm is discharged.
Several witnesses were interviewed at the time of the incident, according to Stewart.
One dog died at the park as a result of its injuries and the second dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian clinic where it later died.
