FORNEY, Texas — Two Forney Police Department police officers were recognized during the Feb. 21 Forney City Council meeting for the actions during a fatal crash on New Year’s Eve.

Chief Rob Sherwin presented 5-year-veteran Police Officer Justin Klosterman and 3-year-veteran Mark Inmon with Meritorious Conduct Awards.

Klosterman and Inmon both sustained smoke-inhalation injuries attempting to save a woman entrapped in a vehicle which struck several trees and engulfed in flames.

Unable to access the victim from the driver’s side, Klosterman and Inmon attempted to save the woman, who was unconscious, from the passenger side of the vehicle.

“Without hesitation, Officers Klosterman and Inmon attempted to rescue the victim from the passenger side and control the fire with a fire extinguisher until Forney firefighters could arrive,” stated Sherwin. “During the rescue attempt, flames from the burning car were a constant threat.”

“Eventually Forney Firefighters arrived and were able to free the trapped victim from the burning car,” Sherwin said. “Unfortunately, the victim did not survive the accident but that in no way diminishes the actions of Officers Klosterman and Inmon.”

“The award for Meritorious Conduct is given for a heroic deed and exceptional meritorious conduct involving exemplary courage, risk, and danger to an officer's personal safety,” he said.

Klosterman and Inmon were treated at Baylor, Scott & White Medical Center in Forney, Texas, for smoke-inhalation before their release in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2017.
