FORNEY, Texas — Two Forney Police Department officers sustained injuries attempting to save the driver of a vehicle which struck several trees and engulfed in flames late Saturday night.
Just after 11 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the crash on Farm-to-Market (FM) 740 at a sharp curve in the road south of McMahan Lane — near the southern city limits of Forney.
Upon arrival, police officers reported one person entrapped in the vehicle which had caught fire.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle in a combined rescue effort, transported to Baylor, Scott & White Emergency Center in Forney, Texas, by CareFlite ambulance, and later pronounced deceased.
One of the police officers was also taken to Baylor, Scott & White in Forney by ground ambulance with smoke-inhalation related injuries and the second police officer self-transported to the hospital with smoke-inhalation related injuries. Its unknown at this time the extent of the injuries or if other injuries were sustained. At approximately 1:45 a.m., both officers were released from the hospital.
The vehicle was traveling southbound on FM 740 when, for yet to be determined reasons, left the roadway and struck several trees before engulfing in flames.
Approximately an hour-and-a-half after the initial response, firefighters pulled a live dog from the scorched vehicle. The dog was taken by animal control to an emergency veterinarian facility after receiving oxygen on scene.
The Forney Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Just after 1:30 a.m., the roadway was reopened.
