Forney ISD Virtual Academy: Pioneering Flexible Learning in Kaufman County

The Forney Independent School District (FISD) is redefining education with its innovative Virtual Academy, a fully accredited online learning program tailored for students in grades 5 through 12. This initiative not only meets the demands of a modern education but also provides a flexible alternative for students who thrive in a technology-driven environment.

Program Overview and Growth

Launched as a pilot in the 2019-2020 school year, the Forney ISD Virtual Academy opened officially in the 2022-2023 academic year with an initial enrollment of 90 high school students. The first year saw a rapid increase, with enrollment climbing to 170 by the end of the year. The program continues to expand, with current enrollment numbers reaching 573 hybrid students and 290 fully virtual students, including 125 seniors in the 2024-2025 school year.

Qualifications for Enrollment

To qualify for the Virtual Academy, students must adhere to specific academic and attendance standards:

  • Out of District: Must have successfully completed all core courses in the previous year with a minimum grade of 70 or higher, achieved academic requirements for STAAR/EOC assessments, and met district attendance standards or provided valid reasons for absences.

  • In District: Students are highly encouraged to meet academic and attendance standards, engage in conversations with families, and utilize safety nets provided by the district.

A Comprehensive Learning Experience

The Forney ISD Virtual Academy offers a holistic virtual experience designed to support both academic and personal growth. Students benefit from a TEKS-aligned curriculum, access to tutorials, and support for special needs. The program also allows participation in on-campus activities, including athletics, fine arts, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses at their home campus.

Beyond academics, students in the Virtual Academy can build relationships, join clubs and organizations, and engage in a flexible learning model that aligns with their goals and family needs. This approach ensures that students receive the same rigor and care as they would in traditional classrooms, empowering them to learn, grow, and thrive.

Hybrid Learning Opportunities

The Virtual Academy also offers a hybrid program that allows students to combine online learning with in-person classes. Hybrid students attend campus for hands-on learning in fine arts, athletics, and CTE programs, while completing core classes virtually. While transportation is not provided, this model fosters a balanced educational experience.

Empowering Student Success

Through a combination of live, teacher-led sessions and independent, self-paced coursework, the Forney ISD Virtual Academy ensures that students remain engaged and on track. Certified Forney ISD teachers provide instruction and feedback, guiding students through their educational journeys. High school students can take advantage of dual credit opportunities and pursue pathways toward Business and Multidisciplinary Endorsements.

The academy’s flexible learning structure empowers students to take ownership of their education while remaining connected to their teachers and peers, preparing them for future success in college, careers, and life.

Looking Ahead

As the Forney ISD Virtual Academy continues to grow, it aims to expand its offerings and reach even more students. With a commitment to providing high-quality education that adapts to the needs of its students, the Forney ISD Virtual Academy is poised for continued success and innovation in the realm of education.
