CRANDALL, Texas — The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers are seeking a woman who tied an elderly woman to a chair and set her house on fire during an armed robbery — leaving the elderly woman seriously injured and hospitalized.
On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at approximately 9:38 a.m., the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a residential structure fire in the 4500 block of Farm-to-Market (FM) 148 in rural Kaufman County — between the city limits of Talty and Crandall.
There, the 911 caller stated the resident, an elderly female, was still inside. A Good Samaritan was flagged down by neighbors and, with the held of a Crandall firefighter, rescued the woman from the home.
The woman, 78 years old, was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital where she remains hospitalized in "guarded" but stable condition.
Once the woman was stable at the hospital, she provided investigators with details of the robbery.
"Preliminary information indicates the victim answered her door to find the suspect pointing a pistol at the victim," according to the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office. "The suspect pushed her way into the house, demanded money, tied the victim to the chair and rummaged through the house."
"Before leaving, the suspect set a fire in the kitchen, leaving the victim tied to the chair," stated the department.
The suspect is described as a heavy-set woman with strawberry hair who was wearing a black hoodie and gold-rimmed glasses. She is wanted on charges for attempted capital murder, aggravated robbery, and arson causing serious bodily injury to an elderly person.
