FORNEY, Texas — The 2017 Unity Bowl Parade has been canceled, according to the Forney Independent School District, due to a number of conflicts including downtown construction.
FORNEY, Texas — The 2017 Unity Bowl Parade has been canceled, according to the Forney Independent School District, due to a number of conflicts including downtown construction.
“Unfortunately, due to a number of conflicts, the 2017 Unity Bowl Parade will not be held this year prior to the Forney High School, North Forney High School football game,” the district stated Monday morning. On Monday night, the district said separate homecoming parades will be schedule in lieu of the Unity Bowl Parade. Those details were not yet available.
The City of Forney currently has construction underway in downtown Forney along Main Street and will soon transition to South Bois d’Arc Street which is expected to be closed for several months. The construction is being conducted on the parade’s traditional route.
“After exploring many possibilities, the Forney Lion’s Club, in agreement with Forney ISD, have decided to cancel the Unity Bowl Parade for this year,” stated the district. “All other Unity Bowl activities will continue as scheduled.”
The district says, due to a result of the decision, Forney High School and North Forney High School are considering a number of other activities to implement this year during their homecoming festivities. Those activities will be announced once they have been decided upon and scheduled.
On Monday night, Forney ISD Superintendent Suzie McWilliams stated the district is in the process of planning homecoming parades for both high schools in lieu of the Unity Bowl Parade. Those plans will be announced when made available.
"We value our town, and our traditions and always want to honor our students," she said. "We will post details as soon as we get confirmation on new routes."
“The Forney Lions Club and Forney ISD would like to thank all of the previous Unity Bowl Parade participants for the patience and understanding regarding this year’s Unity Bowl Parade,” stated the district.
The Forney Lion's Club heads the parade.
