CRANDALL, Texas — The Crandall Independent School District will hold a $125 million bond election on May 6 to expand and construct new facilities to address an ever-growing student enrollment.
The bond referendum proposes three phases of construction to address the increasing student enrollment for a total construction cost of $100.6 million. The district proposes a $125 bond amount to allow for possible construction cost escalations in the future as the phases are constructed.
Phase I of the referendum proposes an expansion at Crandall High School, at approximately $12.3 million, which will allow an additional 450 students for a total capacity of 1,550. A cafeteria addition is also proposed at the high school.
The district says the expansion at Crandall High School will extend its capacity by six years and will relocate off-site classrooms back to Crandall High School allowing for the elimination of the current shuttling of students.
Additionally, Phase I will include the beginning of a two-phase construction of a new elementary school, at approximately $14.5 million, which will initially house one or two grade levels allowing for the extension of all elementary campus capacities by three years.
The district says Phase I will also accomplishes other goals including relieving traffic on Farm-to-Market (FM) 148 and FM 3039, extends capacity of the middle school, and will provide additional gym space for school and community use.
Phase I is estimated at $26.8 million and will be used immediately to resolve facility needs due to fast growth, according to the district.
A future Phase II, totaling approximately $25.5 million, proposes the completion of the new elementary school at $10.5 million and completion of the high school expansion at $15 million. With their completion, the high school will have a capacity of 2,000 students and the new elementary school, which will be Crandall ISD’s fifth elementary campus, will increase the district’s elementary K-6 elementary capacity to 3,230 students.
A future Phase III calls for the construction of a second middle school at a proposed $48.3 million — based on economic growth and availability of bond dollars, according to the district.
The new middle school adds an additional capacity between 1,600 and 1,800 students and allows the district to continue to accommodate for future growth, the district stated.
If passed, taxes are expected to increase by approximately 1.5 cents per $100 of assessed property valuation, or less than $30 per year for a $200,000 home, according to the district.
Citizens over 65 who have filed a homestead exemption will not see a tax increase.
The last day to register to vote in the upcoming May 6 election is on April 6, 2017.
A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for April 18, 2017, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Heartland Hall which is located at 6622 FM 741.
