First-day enrollment figures up, anticipated to continue growing

FORNEY, Texas — The first-day enrollment figures for the Forney (ISD) Independent School District are up by more than 300 students, according to the district.

The 2015-16 first-day enrollment figure came in at 9,116 students, according to Forney ISD Communications Director Larry Coker — a nearly 3.5 percent increase over the 8,812 total enrollment in the 2014-15 school year.

On Tuesday, the second day of school, the enrollment number had jumped to 9,206, according to Coker. The district is anticipating a total enrollment of 9,245 students, a figure estimated by Forney ISD Chief Financial Officer John Chase.

Enrollment projections provided by the district’s demographers show an anticipated total enrollment of 9,270 — a 5.2 percent increase over last year’s enrollment.

The district saw a slowed growth rate between the 2011-12 through 2013-14 school years. Coker says the economy plays a major factor in a district’s growth with new home builds and families moving into the district. Growth beginning in the 2011-12 school year through the 2013-14 school year rose from 8,213, to 8,399, to 8,430 — or 2.26 percent and .4 percent, respectively.

The district began seeing higher enrollment percentages again in the 2014-15 school year which increased 382 students, or 4.5 percent.

Coker says the district is anticipating the enrollment figures to continue to increase due to healthy economic factors and a number of proposed new housing developments within the district’s boundaries.
