A team of Forney High School engineering students in Forney High School's Project Lead the Way program won Verizon's Web App Design Competition. The students first competed at the state level and received Best in State. Later, they took part in a live webinar and presented their app design to a panel of judges.
The students were notified on March 18, that they were one in five high schools chosen as National Champions. The students will now receive professional support and training to help turn their app design into a full fledged working application.
The students had to incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to solve a problem in their school or community. They also had to consider the marketplace need, usefulness, audience, and viability.
The team of students designed an app that would incorporate all of the students, teachers, parents, staff, coaches, and other school administrators the tools they use every day in βOne | Place.β (See YouTube video below for app presentation.)
The team of winning students from Forney High School are Abbey Polzin, Zachary Chavez, Thomas Sifuentes, Travis Colthrap, and Amanda Koif. All of the students plan to continue onto college where they will study engineering. The students were lead under the direction of FHS Project Lead the Way Engineering Instructor Wesley Benjamin.
For winning, Forney High School received a $10,000 cash grant and each of the students received Samsung Galaxy Tablets. The students will be invited to the 2013 National Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando, Florida, to present their app in June.
