SCURRY, Texas — Six members of the Scurry-Rosser High School varsity softball team are facing disciplinary action after a photo was published to social media Friday with a racially sensitive caption.
Scurry-Rosser ISD officials confirmed today that all six students are facing disciplinary action for violations of the district’s student code of conduct, Scurry-Rosser High School student handbook and Scurry-Rosser ISD Athletic Department discipline policy after a player posted the photo during a weather delay at a softball tournament in Malakoff to her Snap Chat account, a social media application.
The picture was captioned with the word, “incognegro”, which means “A person of dark-skinned heritage hiding signs of said heritage. A wolf in sheep's clothing, so to speak,” according to defnintion.net. The term gained popularity in the late 90s, after a rap album was named “incognegro” was released by the rapper Ludacris.
Scurry-Rosser ISD Superintendent James Sanders tells inForney.com that the district is concluding their investigation into the photo.
“We will take action as warranted based on our district policies,” Sanders said. “We don’t believe this incident is indicative of our Scurry-Rosser community and we want to make sure each student knows that they are loved and valued but will be held accountable for their actions.”
While Sanders is not authorized to speak on the specifics of the discipline or the individual students involved, he said that school administrators began actively investigating the situation as soon as they were alerted. District officials were able to determine that the photo had not been altered by a third party but had been captioned and posted by one of the pictured student athletes.
District sources did confirm that some punishments may preclude the players from participating in extracurricular activities, however, they did not confirm whether any of the players had resigned from the softball team or had been dismissed.
