TERRELL - Terrell ISD is implementing a new cell phone policy for Furlough Middle School and Terrell High School.

According to a letter sent to parents, Terrell ISD follows a "no cell phone" policy for students during the school day. The district says this policy has been in place since cell phones were invented.

Beginning in 2024, students at Furlough Middle School and Terrell High School will be assigned a Yondr Pouch, a magnet-locked cellphone bag that prevents use during the day. Upon dismissal for the day, students can unlock their pouches at numerous unlocking stations throughout the campuses and begin using their phones.

Terrell ISD cites research stating that interaction with phones has led to increased anxiety, exposure to adult content, and a lack of connection. Coupled with distractions and disciplinary issues, Terrell ISD believes this policy will benefit positive outcomes.

If parents need to contact their students or if an emergency arises, they can contact the front office to relay a message to their students. Students who rely on a smartphone to manage health conditions can continue doing that as part of their 504 connections. In the event of a lockdown, staff can unlock the Yondr bags when it's safe, allowing students to contact parents.

The district stated that it is committed to providing students with the best possible learning environment and asked for parents' help.
