TERRELL, Texas — Terrell ISD will unveil its new Excellence Center for Enhanced Learning (ExCEL), an 89,000 square foot multipurpose center to the public during an open house on Thursday from 4PM to 8PM.
The ExCEL exists to support the mission of Terrell ISD by providing students academic, socio-emotional and physical development opportunities including character training, expression/creativity, problem solving, teamwork, leadership, communication, resilience, work habits, and more according to the district.
inForney.com was offered exclusive access to the facility for a guided tour in preparation for the open house. Crews were still finishing final details and cleaning the facility in anticipation for its’ first guests.
“This project was a vision of our local school board and administration, and with the community’s support of a bond package, it has become a reality,” said A.J. Knight, the newly hired ExCEL Director. “This is a place where we can offer our community and students experiences never thought possible. The opportunities are endless.”
The programs offered through the ExCEL program will be for children five and older. The majority of the programs will be for youth in kindergarten through eighth grades, but will also have a variety of opportunities for high school students, adults and senior citizens.
The facility includes five classrooms (or meeting rooms), eight volleyball/basketball courts (or four full-size basketball courts), a turfed soccer/football field, a walking track, a fitness center and will soon have a bistro serving healthy food and drink options. In addition to hosting its own programs and leagues, the ExCEL facility will also be available for rental to clubs, organizations, and for tournaments.
“This is not a rec hall,” said Michael French, Terrell ISD Superintendent. “This is a first-class facility for our community that will impact generations of students and families.”
This summer, the ExCEL will host a number of athletic and academic based summer camps for students from any school district as part of their inaugural ExCEL Summer Academy. Registration for both academic and athletic programs are available now.
The fitness center is only open to Terrell ISD employees and senior citizens who live in Terrell. However, all other programs are available to anyone regardless of residence. Terrell ISD students and taxpayers pay reduced fees.
“We invite people and their families to come out and see our new facility and learn more about the opportunities we have to serve them,” Knight said. “I think they will be very proud of what they find here.”
