DALLAS, Texas — An 18-wheeler overturned on U.S. Highway 175 Wednesday night — forcing the closure of the westbound lanes and dumping approximately 36,000 pounds of watermelons onto the highway.
Officials hope to have the highway cleaned by 3 a.m. to avoid any major rush-hour gridlock for Dallas-bound commuters from Kaufman County and southeastern Dallas County.
The wreck was reported at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday and crews continued working on the cleanup well into Thursday morning. As of 1:24 a.m., crews remained on scene with a Bobcat tractor removing the watermelons.
A heavy-duty wrecker was called to the scene to upright the truck. HazMat crews were also on-hand for the cleanup.
Police say the driver of the 18-wheeler approached a sharp curve on U.S. Highway 175 —known as Dead Man’s Curve— in south Dallas going too fast, lost control, and overturned. The driver escaped any injury.
