On Tuesday, November 27, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony took place on Main Street in Downtown Forney. A crowd of approximately 500 people showed up on what has been a rare chilly evening, lending to the feeling that Christmas truly is right around the corner.

A stage was set up behind the tree so that the Rhea Elementary School Choir could perform Christmas songs for the eager crowd of adults and children. After the choir entertained the crowd, local Boy Scout Troop 339 presented the flags on stage and led the crowd in saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

Forney Mayor Darren Rozell came up on stage to address the crowd, and as usual the Union Pacific train had perfect timing, coming through just as the Mayor was about to speak. He joked about the train while “Welcome to Forney” murmurs were heard throughout the amused crowd. The Mayor extended his well wishes to those who had a rough 2012 and expressed his desire to see everyone have a great 2013. He then led the attendees in a countdown to the official lighting of the Christmas tree, and with one flip of a switch, the tree was lit to the delight of the onlookers.

The Warren Middle School Choir took the stage after the tree lighting to perform a few Christmas carols, including a touching rendition of “Silent Night.” Some folks used the opportunity to take pictures near the beautifully decorated tree, while others hopped in line hoping to get a free cup of hot chocolate and a cookie from the Brookshire's table. Overall it was a successful night for what is now a family tradition for many in the community.
