KAUFMAN, Texas — A 9-month-old infant was transported to a Dallas-area hospital on Friday morning after being left in an unattended vehicle for approximately an hour.
The 911 call came at approximately 11:25 a.m., according to Kaufman Police Department Captain Ed Black.
Black was first on scene and says the infant’s skin was so hot it burned his hands as he attempted to cool the infant with wet towels.
Fire fighters and EMS arrived moments later and were able to stabilize the infant who was later transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, for additional treatment, according to Black.
At last check, Black says the infant’s condition was fair but stable.
Although it was reported to police the infant was in the unattended vehicle for approximately an hour, Black says its unknown how long the child was actually in the vehicle.
“This is an ongoing investigation,” Black told inForney.com.
Black says it was a family member who left the infant in the vehicle.
“We have got to stop forgetting children are in the back seat,” he said.
Black says parents or guardians can take several steps to make sure they do not forget children in vehicles including leaving a note on the dash, leaving a purse, wallet, or cell phone in the back seat, or using attachment devices such as a stretchy cord that attaches to the child and the driver which requires an additional manual process to exit the vehicle.
This is a developing story.
