KEMP, Texas — A missing 92-year-old Kemp man was found alive after a 19-hour search effort in a densely wooded area of southwest Kaufman County.
The man reportedly went to check on his fence line, as he frequently does, according to officials, at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday and did not return. His wife reported him missing around 10 p.m.
Weather conditions, including dense fog, hampered the search efforts and forced a ground-only search which temporarily ceased at approximately 2:30 a.m. and resumed at daylight Saturday. With better weather conditions Saturday afternoon, a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter joined the search efforts.
The man, identified as Arthur Akridge, was located just after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and is being transported to an area hospital, according to Kaufman County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jolie Stewart. His current condition is unknown.
Personnel from the Kemp Fire Department, Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, Scurry Fire Department, Combine Fire Department, College Mound Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas Game Wardens Office searched the area of County Road (CR) 4072, CR 4131, and R and R Circle in the Kemp area of far southwest Kaufman County. Neighbors on horseback also assisted search crews.
The search area included dense wooded areas and several small bodies of water. The Trinity River is approximately a mile and a half south of the general search area.
The American Red Cross and CareFlite also responded to the scene.
This is a developing story.
