The Carl “Skip” Thomas Memorial Fund has been established in recognition of Kaufman County Patrol Sergeant “Skip” Thomas. Thomas passed away on October 5th, 2011, as a result of liver disease.

According to a press release from the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, “The Fund will aide first responders who work for any fire or law enforcement agency in Kaufman County that may find themselves in a devastating life situation without any means of support or a way to provide for their family and the daily necessities of life.”

The fund will also be used to offer scholarships to Kemp and Kaufman High School graduates that are interested in pursuing law enforcement as a career.

Thomas family members said that “Skip” often spoke about how fortunate he was to have a family that could offer financial support to him in his time of need. His concern for other first responders and their ability to provide for their family in medical or life altering situations was a major motivation for creating the memorial fund. Other motivations included “Skip's love for God, family, country, fellow deputies, and other first responders.”

The fund was established at the American National Bank in Kaufman and will be managed by at least one member of the Thomas family, an attorney for the Thomas family, and the Kaufman County Sheriff.

High School seniors that are interested in applying for a financial grant may contact Pat Laney, the Public Information Officer for the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, at (972) 932-4337. First responders or their families that find themselves in need can contact Wendy Thomas at (972) 932-4369.

Donations may be made to the Carl “Skip” Thomas Memorial Fund at the American National Bank of Kaufman and are tax deductible.
