TERRELL, Texas — A child was airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital in critical condition after inadvertently being run over by a pickup truck at a Terrell gas station.

Fire officials say the child run over by the pickup truck after exiting the convenience store side of the Travel America truck stop.

Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says the child, a five-year-old boy, was traveling with his family from Longview, Texas, and had stopped for fuel.

The child was accompanied by an adult into the travel center and, as they were heading back to their vehicle at the gas pump, the boy ran across the parking lot and into the path of a 77-year-old Simsboro, Louisiana, man's vehicle. The man, already in motion, inadvertently struck the child.

"The child was swept under the vehicle and both front and rear left tires ran over the body of the child," stated Sansom. "He had visible injuries on his arms and legs and showed scuff marks from the pavement. He had an apparent head injury as well."

The Terrell Fire Department, Terrell Police Department, and CareFlite responded.

The child, reportedly five-years-old, was airlifted by a CareFlite medical helicopter to a Dallas-area hospital in what was described as critical condition with life-threatening injuries. At 1:51 p.m., the child's condition was reportedly stable.

The Terrell Police Department is investigating the accident.

This is a developing story.
