FORNEY, Texas — A 5-year-old boy was flown by CareFlite medical helicopter after a second reported drowning in as many days in the Forney area.
At 5:45 p.m., on Sunday, August 2, 2015, the Forney Fire Department and CareFlite responded to the Travis Ranch community pool on San Antonio Drive for a reported drowning.
“Firefighters and EMS arrived to CPR in progress,” Forney Fire Department Chief Rick Townsend told inForney.com. The boy was taken from the pool where a bystander was administering CPR.
CPR continued as the boy was transported to Lake Pointe Medical Center in Forney, Texas, by a CareFlite ambulance. Once at the hospital, the child was stabilized and flown by a CareFlite medical helicopter to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in what was described as serious condition for further treatment, stated Townsend.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office also responded to the pool.
This continues to be a developing story.
Yesterday, a 3-year-old girl was hospitalized after a near drowning at the Windmill Farms community pool. In this case, bystanders also administered CPR and the girl was awake and alert prior to being transported to Children’s Medical Center by CareFlite ambulance.
Townsend says it is standard procedure to admit individuals into the hospital in near drownings for observation because most issues arise later due to the possibility water entered the lungs which could develop late-delayed pneumonia.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2005-2009, there were an average of 3,533 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day. The CDC provides several tips to help stay safe in the water. Those tips can be viewed at their website, here.
