COMBINE, Texas — A Combine man tragically drowned last month after police say he was attempting to save distressed children from rough surf in the Gulf of Mexico.
Family and friends say he had a servants heart and will be remembered as a hero.
The man, identified by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office as 57-year-old James “Jim” Gray of Combine, Texas, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017, in Fort Morgan, Alabama.
Police say Gray was vacationing with family on the gulf coast at the time of the incident.
The children were later safely located.
A memorial scholarship fund will be established with the Crandall Independent School District for which Gray previously served as a board member for two terms.
Gray also served as a Middle School Sunday School teacher and Chairman of the Deacons at Central Baptist Church in Crandall, according to his obituary.
“Jim will be remembered for his compassion, his willingness to serve, and a devotion to his family and friends that spanned his entire lifetime,” states the obituary. “If help was ever needed, Jim was never more than a phone call away. His last act of service was heroic and compassionate.”
