Commissioners to consider engineering contract for U.S. Highway 80 ramp relocation project

FORNEY, Texas — The Kaufman County Commissioners’ Court is set to vote on an engineering contract for the much-anticipated ramp relocation project on U.S. Highway 80.

FORNEY, Texas — The Kaufman County Commissioners’ Court is set to vote on an engineering contract for the much-anticipated ramp relocation project on U.S. Highway 80.

A $500,000 contract for engineering services is on the September 14, 2015, commissioners’ court agenda. The county took over the project from the City of Forney in September 2014 after the city jump started the project due to a lack of state funding.

The engineering and future project construction costs will be funded by a Kaufman County transportation bond which was approved by voters in November 2013. $2.5 million of the bond package are designated for the ramp relocation project.

According to the agenda packet, the engineer’s scope of work includes the relocation of three eastbound ramps on approximately 1.55 miles of eastbound U.S. Highway 80 between Farm-to-Market (FM) 460 to FM 740, also known as Pinson Road, reconfiguration of FM 688, also known as Broad Street, and the reconstruction of approximately .5 miles of highway frontage road as part of the Broad Street redesign.

The county is expected to proceed with the design schematics originally presented to the City of Forney through their contract with H.W. Lockner.

A work schedule outlines a majority of the engineering will be complete by April 2016 with public meetings, reporting, and other map completions extending into July 2016.

If the county proceeds with construction bids immediately following the completion and approval of the engineering and environmental permits, construction could begin in late 2017.
