FORNEY, Texas — Construction on a decades-long flooding and drainage issue, that has been plaguing residents and drivers along Farm-to-Market (FM) 740 and adjoining residential side streets, will finally begin Monday, according to Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and city officials.
Homes just south of FM 740 in the Heritage Hills and South Lake Estates housing additions were built in the 1980’s and residents say, as far back as they can remember, the streets at FM 740 — Magnolia Drive, Ponderosa Drive, Heritage Hill Drive, Redbud Drive, and Estate Lane — have been flooding during heavy rain events which forces the closure of the roads.
On Monday, August 17, 2015, at 8 a.m., TxDOT, with funding from the City of Forney, will begin construction on the five troubled intersections by building larger culverts, extending existing approaches from the residential streets to FM 740, constructing concrete channels along each approach, and building a concrete channel along FM 740 from Magnolia Drive to Estate Lane.
Heritage Hill Drive currently has a concrete channel, but because of the short approach, has not been effective.
The current project was designed by the Texas Department of Transportation, which manages FM 740, and funded by the City of Forney, which manages the residential streets. A TxDOT contractor assigned to the ongoing FM 740 project has been tasked with the construction.
“It has been a long time coming,” Forney Public Works Director Chris Metz said. “I’m glad it’s finally going to start.”
The residential street approaches are expected to be closed one at a time from August 17, 2015, through August 21, 2015, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. to construct the extended approaches.
Drivers and residents are asked to seek alternate routes as side street closures and alternating lane closures on FM 740 are expected throughout the duration of the project which is expected to last three to four weeks, according to TxDOT.
