Crandall City Council takes action to abate home destroyed in fire last year

CRANDALL, Texas — The Crandall City Council voted Monday night to declare a home, which burned last year, as a public nuisance; paving the way for the property to be abated.

CRANDALL, Texas — The Crandall City Council voted Monday night to declare a home, which burned last year, as a public nuisance; paving the way for the property to be abated.

The two-story home, located at 304 North Second Street, was destroyed in a fire on Sunday morning, November 30, 2014.

After the fire, crews partially demolished the home to allow safe entry for fire investigators — which is the condition the home has remained in since the fire. Now, with a pile of burned ruble and overgrown grass and weeds, neighbors complain the home and property are an eye sore.

The council unanimously voted to declare the property a nuisance which will allow the property to be abated by the city.

City Manager Scott Wall said the city has gone through the tedious process of issuing public notices to the property owner.

The city received a bid of $7,500 to abate the property. Once abated, the city will place a lien on the property.

The property taxes had reportedly not been paid for several years.

“Hopefully, when we get it cleaned up, it makes it an attractive property for somebody to buy and pay the taxes and pay our lien,” stated Wall.
