CRANDALL, Texas — The Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office publicly acknowledged the Crandall Fire Department for their heroic efforts in rescuing a working dog from a house fire on Sunday afternoon.

The Fire Marshal's Office also praised the homeowners in a social media post for adhering to the "close before you doze" fire safety measures, which they believe may have contributed to the dog's survival.

Firefighters from Crandall, Seagoville, Scurry, and Combine responded to the fire at Sonesh Circle on Sunday afternoon, September 24, 2023.

Upon arrival, they found a single-story home with a fire rapidly spreading from the back side into the living space and attic.

Neighbors reported that the occupants had left earlier in the day and were not at home when the fire broke out. As firefighters battled the blaze, they heard a dog barking from inside the house and immediately initiated a search. The dog eventually lost consciousness and stopped barking, prompting firefighters to intensify their rescue efforts.

By the time firefighters located the dog, it was limp and had to be dragged out of the burning house. Once outside, the dog regained consciousness but had sustained serious burns and smoke inhalation.

The Scurry Fire Department coordinated with a local veterinarian to provide immediate on-scene treatment for the dog.

The Fire Marshal's Office emphasized the importance of the "close before you doze" campaign in their social media post, noting that the homeowners' adherence to this safety measure likely slowed the spread of the fire between rooms, potentially saving the dog's life.
