In 2010 an estimated 8,600 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for firework related injuries, with more than half of those injuries being burns. Also reported were 15,500 fires, including 1,100 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, 14,100 outside and other fires. These fires resulted in eight civilian deaths and 36 million dollars in direct property damage.

If you are going to discharge fireworks outside the city, please make sure all children are supervised by an adult. The risk of firework injury is highest for children ages 5 to 14, with more than twice the risk for the general population. You should have a garden hose and a bucket of water nearby and never relight a “dud” firework. The National Council on Fireworks Safety recommends you, “Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.”

After the fireworks are spent and have had time to cool down, soak them with water before putting them in the garbage. It's important to clean up any leftover mess from the fireworks. If you believe illegal fireworks are being used inside the city limits, call the Forney Police Department at 972-564-7600. If you believe illegal fireworks are being used in Kaufman County, you can call the Sheriff's Office at 972-932-4337.

If you have any questions please contact Fire Marshal John Holcomb at 972-564-7368. The City of Forney, the Forney Fire Department, and inForney.com wishes everybody a Happy and Safe Fourth of July.
