HEARTLAND, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a double-fatal, head-on collision on Farm-to-Market (FM) 741 which forced the closure of the roadway for several hours overnight.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Kyle Bradford says the wreck occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on FM 741 approximately two miles south of Interstate 20.

A man driving a white Chevy pickup truck was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when he struck a black Ford F-150 which was traveling southbound, according to Bradford.

The drivers of both pickup trucks were killed in the crash, Bradford said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety released the names of the deceased on Wednesday morning identifying the male driver of the Chevy as 29-year-old Leyva Cerda of Heartland and the female driver of the Ford as 36-year-old Kelly Jones of Crandall.

Bradford says its unclear why the man was traveling on the wrong side of the roadway but preliminary investigation indicates his headlights may have been off at the time of the crash.

At this time, there is no indication alcohol was a factor, Bradford said. A toxicology screen has been ordered.

Two children in the Ford sustained what were described as non-life threatening injuries — one was flown by CareFlite medical helicopter to Dallas Medical Center and the other was taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance.

FM 741 between Crandall and Heartland was closed for more than three hours before it reopened at 12:51 a.m.

The Crandall Fire Department, Talty Police Department, Crandall Police Department, Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, CareFlite, and the Texas Department of Public Safety all responded to the scene.
