KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — DEVELOPING: A Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper was struck by an 18-wheeler in slowed traffic on Thursday near the Dallas-Kaufman County line.
KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — DEVELOPING: A Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper was struck by an 18-wheeler in slowed traffic on Thursday near the Dallas-Kaufman County line.
"At approximately 4:09 p.m., a highway patrol trooper was traveling east on Highway 80 near Lawson Road in slow traffic," Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Kyle Bradford told inForney.com. "Preliminary information indicates a truck tractor semi-trailer was approaching the trooper from behind. The driver of the truck did not see the traffic slowing and struck the highway patrol vehicle causing it to strike the semi in front of it."
Emergency personnel extricated the trooper who was pinned in his vehicle against the concert median. He was conscious and alert when airlifted to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, and is expected to be okay.
The trooper is part of the Texas Department of Public Safety's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement unit, according to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Kyle Bradford
Two others were transported by ground ambulance to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in unknown condition.
The Forney Fire Department, Forney Police Department, CareFlite, Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, Precinct 2 Constable's Office, Sunnyvale Fire Department and EMS, and DPS responded to the crash scene.
An initial report included preliminary information from DPS which suggested the trooper was on a traffic stop when he was struck. It has been updated to reflect the trooper was in slowed traffic when he was struck from behind.
