FORNEY, Texas — A Grand Prairie, Texas, man was sentenced on Wednesday to 13 years in prison for a 2015 fatal wrong-way crash which claimed the life of a Forney, Texas, mother and severely injured her two children.
On May 16, 2015, Crystal Nuncio of Forney, Texas, was driving her two children —nine-month-old son and 10-year-old daughter— to a caretaker’s house when their vehicle was struck head-on by 25-year-old Luis Rangel Rodriguez of Grand Prairie, Texas.
Nuncio was on the way to work as a dispatcher for the Garland Police Department when the wreck occurred on Interstate 635 in Garland, Texas. Nuncio was pronounced deceased at the scene and her daughter, who was ejected from the vehicle, sustained critical injuries. Her son was listed in stable condition having suffered a broken femur.
Rodriguez was charged with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault for which he pled guilty earlier this week. Yesterday, a jury sentenced Rodriguez to 13 years in prison.
Rodriguez suffered non-life threatening injuries and, according to court documents, admitted to drinking eight beers the night before the fatal crash.
Nuncio had worked for the Garland Police Department Communications Unit as a dispatcher for nine years.
The week of April 10-16, 2016 is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week in which dispatchers across the country are recognized for their critical and vital role between citizens and first responders.
