KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Firefighters throughout Kaufman County are battling at least eight active fires, including six along Interstate 20 that are causing major traffic delays, according to fire officials.

The largest fire, north of Interstate 20 and east of Wilson Road, also known as County Road 309, is approximately 40 to 50 acres in size, according to Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie.

Five other spot fires along Interstate 20 were likely sparked by something being dragged behind a vehicle, something as simple as a chain dragging on the highway, says Howie.

The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department, City of Terrell Fire Department, College Mound Volunteer Fire Department, Elmo Volunteer Fire Department, Kaufman Fire Department, Crandall Fire Department, and Forney Fire Department, are assisting on the Interstate 20 fires, according to Howie.

Traffic is backed up approximately 14 miles into Van Zandt County.

The Scurry Volunteer Fire Department and Rosser Volunteer Fire Department are on a fire in the Scurry area, he said.

This is a developing story.
