“Forney ISD’s hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Please know that Forney ISD works closely with our principals and school resource officers to make every effort to ensure the safety of our students while they are in our schools.

When appropriate, our faculty and staff will have careful discussions with our students regarding this event. And as always, schools have counselors available on every campus should a student want to talk with someone.

Please be assured that Forney ISD is constantly monitoring and ensuring the safety of students in our schools every day, not just when a tragic event occurs such as the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 14.

All of the campuses have safety drills and lock down drills that are practiced throughout the school year. In addition, all exterior doors to the schools are locked throughout the day and school resource officers are constantly monitoring the schools throughout the school day. In addition, no visitors are allowed in and out of the building without first checking in at the front desk of each school. All of the schools have locked doors preventing anyone from freely entering the building, even from the front entrance.

If an event such as the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School were to take place, the school would go into immediate lock down and the police would be notified immediately. At that point all classroom doors are shut and locked, lights are turned out and all windows and doors are covered. Everyone is instructed to sit on the floor with their back to the wall, away from the door and to remain quiet. No one is allowed to leave the campus until police have cleared the building and given the okay to come out of their rooms.

Forney ISD has plans like these for a number of situations including incidents near schools, bomb threats, severe weather situations (tornados), etc.

Please understand that all of us want all of our students and staff to be safe and we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our schools are a safe and secure environment for everyone.”
