COLLEGE MOUND, Texas — Overnight flooding prompted voluntary evacuations in eastern Kaufman County.
As heavy rains moved through Kaufman County on Thursday evening, members of the College Mound Volunteer Fire Department (CMVFD) began checking low-lying areas for flooding, according to CMVFD Public Information Officer Terry Van Sickle Sr.
Firefighters discovered flooding along the 14000 block of Hickory Tree Lane and an area of the road which leads to a bridge that was beginning to wash away.
“Concerned that residents may become trapped as the road became impassable a voluntary evacuation order was issued by College Mound Fire Chief J. L. Phillips,” stated Van Sickle.
Firefighters utilized their all terrain utility vehicle, Crawler 1, to drive into flood prone areas to alert residents. Seven people, two adults and five children, decided to evacuate.
A bus was from the College Mound Methodist Church was requested to transport the evacuated individuals to the College Mound Volunteer Fire Department fire station where the American Red Cross set up a temporary shelter.
Precinct 1 Road and Bridge crews assisted in making temporary repairs to a washed out area of the road and the displaced residents were able to return to their homes around 2 a.m.
“Chief Phillips would like to thank the College Mound Methodist Church, The American Red Cross and Precinct 1 Road and Bridge crews,” stated Van Sickle. “All came together to assist College Mound firefighters in keeping residents safe during this weather emergency.”
