FORNEY, Texas — It’s been nearly two weeks since a series of tornadoes struck Canton, Texas, and surrounding area — killing four and injuring dozens.
The Forney Fire Department has been collecting donations for tornado victims and others impacted by the storms and, earlier today, members of the Forney High School and North Forney High School soccer teams dropped off two truckloads of donations collected through their “Rise Up” collection efforts.
“In 2012, Forney felt the devastation of a tornado. People from surrounding communities came together to restore our city,” stated the district’s website in announcing the Rise Up collection campaign. “Now it’s time to help our neighbors in need.”
Forney Fire Department Chief Rick Townsend says two truckloads have already been collected and sent to Canton, Texas, where the donations were further distributed to those impacted.
Townsend says the communities response has been outstanding and something the Forney community has been known for — assisting a neighboring community in need when called upon.
Members of the Forney Fire Department and volunteer fire department responded to a call for assistance on April 29, 2017, after several tornadoes struck the Van Zandt County, Canton, and surrounding areas.
Townsend says the department will continue to collect donations at Central Fire Station located 104 East Aimee Street behind the Forney Post Office.
Donations can also be made to the Van Zandt County Tornado Relief 2017 fund at First State Bank in Ben Wheeler, Texas. Donations can be made over the phone by calling (903) 833-5861 or by mail at P.O. Box 97, Ben Wheeler, Texas, 75754. Volunteer efforts are being coordinated at the Recovery Center located at the Van Zandt County Fairgrounds at 24742 State Highway 64 in Canton, Texas.
