The Forney Fire Department responded to a controlled pasture burn on ranch land just north of North Forney High School and the Windmill Farms housing development earlier today, March 13, at approximately 1:30 p.m. The Fire Department was called out to the controlled burn because a section of the fire, near a structure and home on the property, began to burn out of control.

The section that was burning out of control was a pile of scrap wood and lumber that had been illegally dumped on the property, according to a witness on site.

After the fire department extinguished the out of control section of the fire, the controlled burn was allowed to finish. Controlled burns are utilized to help reduce the uncontrolled grass fires later in the summer when temperatures exceed 100 degrees.

Forney Fire Chief Townsend said, “Traditionally [this time of year] has been one of the worst months for grass fires.” No one was injured during the fire and the fire is back under control by those overseeing it. The controlled burn is expected to go into the night as the remainder of the pasture is burned and dwindles down.
