FORNEY, Texas — A Forney High School student began collecting donations and helping an effort to rescue, care for, and reunite pets with victims of a tornado that struck Sunnyvale, Garland, and Rowlett on Saturday night, December 26, 2015.
In response to social media posts for lost, found, or injured pets following the tornado, Forney High School senior Jaycee McIntyre began collecting donations such as pet crates, blankets, beds, and food, according to her softball coach Regina DeDominicis.
With more than 1,400 homes damaged in Rowlett and Garland, DeDominicis says not only did McIntyre begin collecting much-needed pet-related items, but, she also went through a training class for volunteers to gain access to the tornado stricken area to assist in rescuing animals either lost or trapped in debris.
“Once she completed the training, she was allowed to go in with other volunteers to help find animals that needed to be rescued,” stated DeDominicis on the district’s website. “As a pet owner herself, her heart went out to the pets and their needs.”
DeDominicis says McIntyre will check other affected areas and their needs tomorrow and will provide a list of additional needs as they are presented.
To donate items such as blankets, food, collars, and leashes, contact Jennifer Hooser, Jaycee’s mother, at (972) 978-7517.
In Rowlett, displaced and found pets are being accepted at the Rowlett Animal Shelter at 4402 Industrial. The shelter can be contacted at (972) 412-6219. In Garland, animals have been taken to the Garland Animal Shelter at 600 Tower Street.
On Monday, NBC DFW captured the moment two dogs were rescued from a destroyed home, see video below.
