FORNEY, Texas — Forney Police Department officer Nicole Phillips has been named Public Citizen of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

"She has worked hard to positively affect the lives of others and continues to reach more people," read a statement from the Forney Police Department. "We could not be more proud of her and her accomplishments."

The NASW Public Citizen of The Year Award honors an outstanding member of the community, a non-social worker, whose accomplishments exemplify the values and mission of professional social work.

Additionally, award recipients must "make a significant contribution to an area or population of concern to the social work profession such as at-risk or vulnerable populations; quality of life in communities; social issues;" and act with courage, demonstrate outstanding leadership, and exemplify social work value and ethics.

Nicole and her husband, Justin, are working towards a 2019 goal of opening phase 1 of an emergency shelter for teen girls — focusing on pregnant teens and teen mothers.

"We want to give these mothers and their children every tool they need to succeed," stated Phillips on the Blue House 4 Teens Facebook Page.

In her acceptance speech, Phillips thanked her husband for his unwavering support.

"Thank you for being my rock as we go through this journey called life," she said.

Additionally, Phillips thanked her lieutenants, Todd and John, and her friends for their continued support.
