FORNEY, Texas — Neighbors welcomed home a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) police officer Saturday morning who was injured in a downtown Dallas shooting on Thursday night.
44-year-old DART police officer Elmar “Lee” Cannon of Forney, Texas, was discharged from the hospital on Saturday morning, according to DART.
Cannon, who joined the DART police department in 2009, was one of 12 police officers targeted in a shooting spree in downtown Dallas following a demonstration and march against officer-involved shooting incidents across the country.
The protest, which began peacefully, turned violent as it reached its end on Thursday night. Five police officers were killed.
Neighbors in Travis Ranch welcomed Cannon home on Saturday morning by lining up along Travis Ranch Boulevard and displaying signs of support and encouragement at his home. Neighbors have also begun a meal train and plan to assist with lawn care in the coming weeks.
Two other DART officers, Misty McBride and Jesus Retana, who were also injured have been released from Dallas-area hospitals. DART officer Brent Thompson was killed in the attack. A GoFundMe account has been established in honor of Thompson.
Dallas Police Department officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, officer Michael Krol, 40, sergeant Michael Smith, 55, senior corporal Lorne Ahrens, 48, were also killed in the attack.
Police identified 25-year-old Micah X. Johnson of Mesquite, Texas, as the suspect in the deadly shooting which became the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since 9/11.
Neighbors have begun tying blue ribbons around the neighborhood in support of law enforcement.
