FORNEY, Texas — The Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday night approved two final plats which will make way for construction to begin on the Gateway Boulevard extension from the Gateway Bridge to Farm-to-Market (FM) 1641.

The extension will connect at the Gateway Bridge and travel south, will cross County Road 212, and make an s-curve shape further south towards FM 1641 — completing an eastern loop from FM 548 to FM 1641.

A representative of the developer told commissioners they will begin bidding out the projects in the next two weeks and anticipate completing the construction in late 2015 or early 2016.

The construction of the southern extension of Gateway Boulevard was a requirement in a development agreement between the City of Forney and the master-planned Gateway Parks development as a stipulation that must have been completed before construction could begin on homes in what will eventually be an 1,860 home community.

The Gateway Parks planned development is part of a 2,000-acre overall master plan which will run adjacent Gateway Boulevard from FM 548 north of U.S. Highway 80 to FM 1641 south of U.S. Highway 80. The planned development includes the Cedars at the Gateway apartment community which is currently building its second phase.

The developer invested $12 million in the Gateway Bridge and will have invested $13 million in infrastructure at Gateway Parks before the first homes begin to be built in approximately two years, a representative told the Forney City Council in January 2015.

Included in the final plat for the Gateway Boulevard extension was 4.024 acres for an amenity center for the Gateway Parks development.
