KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Persistent heavy rains have caused a levee failure in southern Kaufman County along the East Fork Trinity River and forced the closure of several county roads as well as threatening the closure of a state highway, according to officials.
An Areal Flood Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for southern Kaufman County due to a levee failure on the East Fork Trinity River levee system near Rosser, Texas.
Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie says the water is continuing to spread out in nearby pastures and is threatening to close State Highway 34 in between Kaufman County and Ellis County. Howie says officials are monitoring the roadway overnight to determine if a closure will be necessary.
Earlier today, Howie said approximately 3,200 acres had flooded in the area as the water continued to wash out the levee in several places.
Flooding has already closed County Roads 245, 281, 347, 125, 109, and 328. County Roads 109 and 328 were completely washed out and will need repairs before they are reopened, according to Howie.
Raining is expected to continue until midnight or 1 a.m., according to Howie.
The National Weather Service extended a Flood Warning near Rosser until December 3, 2015, at 8:24 p.m. and near Crandall and Combine until November 30, 2015, until 5:42 p.m.
This is a developing story.
