With temperatures climbing throughout Texas, there are some important hot weather tips to consider. Here are some ideas I have received from Forney residents about how to protect yourself this summer.
*Despite the high temperatures, most of us still have to do our shopping and run our errands. Consider taking a small cooler of cold bottled water with you on these excursions. Keeping hydrated during these brutal summer months is essential to your health.
*Put your car window shade up if you are leaving your car parked in the sun. Yes your car interior will still be hot when you get back in the vehicle, but it should help you not to burn your skin on a hot steering wheel or seat!
*It's been said many times, but here is one more reminder: Do not leave your children, your pets, or elderly folks sitting in your parked car alone. The temperatures inside a vehicle, even with the windows cracked, can climb 20 plus degrees in just minutes. Every year we hear about a child dying from being left in a hot vehicle in the summer months. Don't let this happen to you.
No need for boredom: Seven things for kids to do in Forney this summer
*One of the most popular ways to get relief from the heat is to go swimming. Remember to wear your sunscreen, never leave kids unattended at the pool, and consider taking a CPR class. You never know when you might need CPR, and it is better to know it and not need it than to need it and not know it.
*If you are a runner/jogger and you still want to continue your exercise outside, consider running in areas where there is adequate shading. Forney Community Park has running trails that are mostly shaded by trees. It can be up to 10 degrees cooler in the shade.
*The best and easiest way to avoid heat related problems this summer is to limit your outdoor activities to the morning or evening hours whenever possible. A prime example of that is to do your yard work during the early or later hours and avoid the time of day when the temperature is at its peak.
