FORNEY, Texas — The implementation of the quiet zone, which was to be in effect today, August 8, 2016, has been delayed approximately 45 days, according to the City of Forney.
“On June 24, the City of Forney submitted a Notice of Establishment to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in regards to the Downtown Quiet Zone, which was to be in effect on August 8,” stated the City of Forney in a Monday morning release.
“Upon inspection of the Quiet Zone, Union Pacific Railroad (UP) identified potential safety concerns,” stated the city.
“As per federal regulations regarding the establishment of a Quiet Zone, outlined by the FRA, the Quiet Zone will not be enacted until the safety concerns are addressed and approved by UP and the FRA,” stated the City of Forney. “Once the safety concerns are met, the City will send an updated Notice of Establishment.”
The City of Forney is required to allow 21 days from the Notice of Establishment to the implementation date.
“We anticipate a 45-day delay for the implementation of the Quiet Zone, but are extremely confident in the completion,” stated the City of Forney. “Staff will continue to work on addressing the issues with both UP and the FRA.”
The establishment of the quiet zone —an area in which trains cannot sound their warning horn unless of an emergency— has been in the works for nearly a decade and is proposed to be established between South Bois D’ Arc Street and Farm-to-Market (FM) 548.
