SUNNYVALE, Texas — Investigators are seeking information on a fatal pedestrian crash which occurred on U.S. Highway 80 on Thursday night.
Police say a 17-year-old male, identified as North Mesquite High School student Joseph Huerta, was involved in a single-vehicle crash underneath the Collins Road bridge at U.S. Highway 80 when, for unknown reasons, he walked up the highway embankment where he was struck and killed by a vehicle on eastbound U.S. Highway 80.
The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m.
Police say a possibly newer model, dark-colored, small SUV may have struck the man and fled the scene. The vehicle will likely have front-end damage. Anyone with information on the vehicle or its whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office at (214) 749-8641.
A be-on-the-lookout notification was sent to the Forney Police Department for the vehicle which may have continued eastbound on the highway.
The Mesquite Independent School District released the following statement on Friday:
"It is always upsetting when something like this happens, and we may not understand the reasons. This is a very sad thing for our entire school, but I know all of you will be kind and considerate of each other. Everyone deals with loss in his or her own way, and we all need to support each other and respect each other's emotions during this time."
Grief counselors were also made available Friday.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Sunnyvale Fire Department responded to the scene.
This is a developing story.
