FORNEY, Texas — An instrument malfunction caused several thousand gallons of water to dump from the historic water tower in downtown Forney overnight.
According to Public Works Director Chris Metz, the tower’s water level indicator malfunctioned telling the tower to pump water into the tower which resulted in the overflow valve to open. The malfunction may have been caused by the cold weather.
The tower dumped water last night at around 7 p.m. and again this morning at around 6 a.m. Crews made adjustments to the thresholds in the pumps which tell the pumps when to turn on and off last night and crews climbed the tower this morning to make repairs to the water level probe.
The tower only dumped water for a short period of time in both instances and Metz estimates less than 50,000 gallons of water was discharged from the tower.
There were no concerns of ice accumulating on Aimee Street overnight because the water quickly ran-off into nearby drainage ditches.
