Kaufman County Clerk Laura Hughes released a warning to Kaufman County residents about a potential phone scam recently striking Kaufman County.

Kaufman County Clerk Laura Hughes released a warning to Kaufman County residents about a potential phone scam recently striking Kaufman County.

According to Hughes, “her office has received several phone calls from concerned residents who have been contacted by a 'detective' about an overdue payday loan or lien.” The “detective” also claims to work for the County Clerk's office and threatens legal action if a debt or lien isn't immediately paid over the phone with a credit card.

“While it is the job of the Courts’ compliance department to make phone calls to defendants who have missed a court payment, we would never utilize the tactics demonstrated by these scammers,” states Hughes. “These scammers are persistent and their calls have very threatening undertones.”

“While we cannot provide legal advice,” states Hughes, “we would caution residents to not give these fake collectors any personal or financial information, to contact the original creditor, and report the call to the FTC, the Texas Attorney General's office, or local law enforcement.”
