KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Several Kaufman County law enforcement agencies are among 453 different jurisdictions across the State of Texas to receive grants to purchase rifle-resistant body armor, Governor Greg Abbott announced yesterday.

In total, $23 million was granted to departments across the state for the purchase of 32,842 rifle-resistant vests designed to protect against high-caliber rifle rounds.

Abbott made the announcement yesterday during a visit with the Dallas Police Association on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

The following Kaufman County law enforcement agencies applied for and received grants: Crandall Police Department received a grant for 19 vests at a cost of $10,754; Forney Police Department for 21 vests at $12,810; Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office for 98 vests at $58,363.96; and the Kaufman Police Department for 20 vests at $15,900.

"My top priority as governor is to keep our communities safe, and I thank the law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to make that possible," stated Abbott.

"The job of our law enforcement community is becoming more difficult as the threats our officers face continue to increase,” he said. “The State of Texas will not sit idly by and tolerate these actions against officers who are simply doing their job to uphold the law and protect the people of Texas. That is why I’m proud to present these grants to Police Departments across Texas so they can equip their officers with the life-saving equipment they deserve."
