KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Kaufman County law enforcement agencies held a moment of silence earlier today in remembrance of five Dallas law enforcement brethren killed in the line of duty on July 7, 2016.

Yesterday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statewide call to stand with law enforcement in Texas and asked all Texas law enforcement officers to turn on their red and blue lights for a one-minute moment of silence on Friday at 10 a.m.

“Respect for our law enforcement officials must be restored in this nation,” said Governor Abbott.

Last year, Dallas Police Department officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, Patrick Zamarripa, and DART officer Brent Thompson were killed in the line of duty that tragic night.

“Every day, but especially today, we remember the men who sacrificed their lives for the safety of the citizens of Dallas, the men who left behind their loved ones to protect people they did not even know,” the Dallas Police Department stated.

“Though we mourn, we will continue to serve the citizens and provide a safe environment for the City of Dallas,” the department’s statement continued. “We recognize that we could not have made it through this year without the unwavering support from not only the citizens of Dallas, but from citizens the world over.”

“Today is a day of remembrance for all Texans, but especially for the law enforcement community and their families,” he said. “Although Texas has dedicated this day as Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Day, we should always remember the bravery of those who wear the shield to protect our way of life. Cecilia and I ask that all Texans take a moment to pray for our law enforcement and offer thanks for their commitment to keep our communities safe.”

Additionally, tonight, the Governor’s Mansion will be lit blue in recognition of Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Day.
