KAUFMAN—Kaufman County Veterans Service Officer Robert Hunter and Representative Keith Bell led the community in a solemn and significant remembrance service this Memorial Day, which holds deep meaning for us all.
Memorial Day, formally known as Decoration Day, dates back to the mid-1800s. In 1950, Congress approved a joint resolution calling on the president to “issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period during each such day when the people of the United States might unite in such supplication."
In Kaufman County, State Representative Keith Bell said today is a day to remember those no longer with us.
“On this Memorial Day, we come together with grateful hearts to remember those who are no longer with us,” said Representative Bell. “This courage and dedication have safeguarded our freedoms.”
Representative Bell said those who paid the price with their lives have shaped our nation's fabric.
“Their acts of bravery, duty, and honor have shaped the fabric of this great nation, ensuring the American way of life endures for future generations,” said Representative Bell.
“The legacies left by those whose handprints line Hollywood Boulevard, whose busts adorn halls of fame, whose names grace buildings of commerce, and government, and academia, pale in comparison to the significance of the names edged in stone who died defending our great nation on the graves and the monuments that are before us today.”
More than 100 people gathered for the service, including a children's honor guard, veterans and their families, and community leaders who paused to remember the price paid by many for the cause of freedom.
