KEMP, Texas — A Kemp-area home was destroyed in a fire overnight.
At approximately 10:45 p.m., the Kemp Fire Department responded to the 17900 block of Farm-to-Market (FM) 148 and, upon arrival, observed heavy fire from the two-story brick home.
Firefighters requested mutual aide from the Scurry and Mabank Fire Departments.
Firefighters attacked the fire defensively from the exterior and utilized a portable drop tank due to the scarcity of fire hydrants in the area.
Neighbors say the elderly homeowners recently returned home from an out-of-state trip, fell ill, and were staying with family in Mabank at the time of the blaze.
The Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire which completely destroyed the home.
As of 1:15 a.m., FM 148 was closed to allow safe fire operations.
