FORNEY—Observing Labor Day, most government offices are closed in Kaufman County. This is a reminder of Americans' daily work to provide for their families, shape our community, and enhance the quality of life in our communities and nation.
The first Labor Day Parade took place in New York City on September 5, 1882, and in 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Today, we celebrate Americans' daily work to provide for their families, boost the economy, and improve our communities and country.
According to the Department of Labor, “American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.”
The National Weather Service expects a brief morning shower, increasing rain chances this afternoon. Highs are expected to top out around 90 this afternoon.
