A memorial service was held for slain Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse on Saturday, February 9, at Terrell ISD's Performing Arts Center. Mark Hasse, 57, was shot multiple times as he walked from his car to the Kaufman County Courthouse on the morning of January 31.
Hundreds of people gathered at the memorial service to pay respect to an individual who fought tirelessly to protect the citizens of Kaufman County. Paul Hasse, Mark Hasse's brother, said, “Mark really loved this community, he loved being a lawyer, he loved being a prosecutor. I'm sure that the happiest times of his life were his days in the Dallas DA office and his days here in Kaufman County.”
Paul Hasse also said, “More than anything else, he liked helping victims and he liked making his community a safer place to be for other people to live in and he did that by putting bad guys away for a very long time.”
County Judge Bruce Wood quoted Edmund Burke, an Irish statesmen from the late 1700's, who once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Wood then said, “I can assure everyone here today and those that are listening that Mark Hasse was most certainly not of those men who did nothing. He triumphed over evil everyday of his professional life. The citizens of Kaufman County, the State of Texas, and our great country are in a much safer and better place because of Mark Hasse.”
Federal, state, and local authorities are still searching for the suspect in the murder investigation and an award for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case is over $70,000. Last week, investigators released a statement on February 5th stating, “Investigators have also been thorough in their collection and review of area surveillance video and continue to evaluate additional locations for video retrieval.”
