Motorists stranded after filling up with contaminated fuel

TERRELL, Texas — Several motorists became stranded over the holiday weekend after fueling up at a Terrell-area gas station.

TERRELL, Texas — Several motorists became stranded over the holiday weekend after fueling up at a Terrell-area gas station.

Emily Watson tells inForney.com her husband fueled up at the Exxon Tiger Mart gas station on Farm-to-Market (FM) 1641 and Interstate 20 but didn’t make it home before his car broke down.

The culprit? Contaminated fuel.

The gas station is supplied by Victron Energy Inc. and operated by Tatco Properties Inc., an independent dealer, according to ExxonMobile. ExxonMobile no longer operates retail locations in the United States but researched the issue when contacted by inForney.com.

Due to a tank cap not being properly installed, a tank containing unleaded gasoline at Tiger Mart #22 in Terrell was contaminated with rainwater, according to Christian Flathman, Public and Government Affairs spokesperson for Exxon Mobile Corporation.

“As soon as the issue was noticed, the station immediately discontinued sales of regular and mid-grade gasoline,” stated Flathman. “ExxonMobil has been in contact with the station owners and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Watson, whose vehicle is being repaired alongside approximately 13 other vehicles at an automotive repair shop in Terrell, said, “I feel the worst for those that were traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday and are now stuck waiting for repairs.”

“We have requested that the station ownership work with motorists to honor all valid claims swiftly and effectively,” stated Flathman.

Flathman says if customers have questions or concerns regarding fuel they may have purchased at the Tiger Mart 22 station to contact the station directly. The number listed for the station is (972) 552-2122.

In the meantime, Watson says she and others in her situation have been directed to the station’s insurance company for claims to cover damage caused by the contaminated fuel.

Victron Energy was contacted Tuesday night but unavailable for comment at the time of press.
